  1. Different parts of the country use different methods. What works in Florida would be foolish to try in Indiana. So many types of grass seed to plant.Take a second if you can and let us know where you live, then you will get the answer that applies to your region.

  2. There are 2 trains of thought on this.

Most landscapers will put down the seed first then the fertilizer next on the same day to keep cost down.

Some studies have shown that it might be best to wait until the seed germinates, then fertilize so the fertilizer is being used more efficiently.

Although applying on the same day will be fine!

I forgot what state you lived in, but below is a link to Michigan state university. There is some very good info for a starter.

  3. i dont know where you live but the fall is the best time to put down grass seed and you can put fertilizer down with it if you prefer however do not put WEED and feed down just feed. the weed will kill the grass seed

  4. The first thing you want to do is prepare the ground.  Remove all the vegetative matter from the top, and then either add several inches of top soil or use a rake to rough up the surface of the ground so the seeds have a way to more easily penetrate the ground.

After the soil is prepared, use a spreader or your hand to disperse the seeds throughout the yard.  After the seeds are down, use a spreader to disperse "starter fertilizer" (Scotts makes a very good one).

Make sure you keep the soil moist, and don't use a weed-n-feed until after the 4th mowing at least.  Also, try to avoid watering much at night since it incourages mold/fungus growth on the yard.

As mentioned in other comments, fall is the best time to put in a new yard.

Remember, seeds only get one chance to germinate so make sure you install the lawn at a time when you'd be able to water regularly, and when it's not prohibitively hot/cold.

  5. The easiest way is to spread the seed, follow up with the starter fertilizer, and then lightly cover the entire area with straw.
