When recovering refrigerant from a system that experienced a compressor burnout the technician should watch for signs of contamination in the oil because?

A) Contaminants cannot be removed from the refrigerant and the refrigerant will have to be destroyed by the reclamation center.

B) The system will have to be flushed if contaminants are present.

C) The contaminants will eat away at the recovery equipment.

D) The contaminants will plug up the recovery equipment.

  1. The contaminants cant be remove easily from refrigerant, so better to destroy the refrigerant, flush the system by N2 and also flush by refrigerant, also change the strainer / drier / filter, after that replace the new compressor. Otherwise the oil of new compressor and new charged refrigerant will pollute frequently.  


  2. My short experience with HVAC says purge the system of contaminants. If you get acid from the burnout, It can spread through the system. You will be replacing the compressor, so you don't want the contaminants elsewhere in the system to contaminate that.

  3. yea, I see what you mean.  I don't find an actual answer either.  I would say that the answer is B.  Why?  Because they talk about flushing the system with nitrogen if there are caontaminants in the oil of a burned out compressor.  Wish i could have been of more help.

  4. I too would pick B). See page 3 (also repeated on page 7) of the study guide you linked to, while it is not worded the same as the question, it says "if the system is flushed" not "the system will have to be flushed"  but that is close enough that I would pick B)
