when referring to the vietnam war what did it mean to be "in the sh*t?"

i was at a bar and heard someone say "i was in vietnam for 3 years" and some other guy asked "where you in the sh*t?"

what does that mean?

  3. i was around during that time period and never heard that expression. it was just something the guy said.

  4. It means you were in combat and the saying came from a movie full metal jacket

  5. He was asking if he saw heavy combat.

    Most of us did not actively seek out the enemy and have to  risk ambush and booby traps.

    For every guy that was out taking the war to the enemy, there were eight to ten of us who were making it possible.

    Most of us saw some action even if it was only the occasional rocket or mortar shell landing in the compound.

    Those who had to actually go out and chase the enemy down were and are in a league of their own.

    Of course, there are more people in bars claiming to have been in that position than there were people actually stationed in Vietnam.
