We have a standard 9X10 L-shaped kitchen. It's not small but it's not conducive to entertaining as most of our parties end up being kitchen parties. We cannot tear down any interior walls because of the design of the house and other connecting rooms. I was thinking of enlarging the square footage by adding outwards.

I understand additions cost a lot, but what is the ballpark figure? I am looking to extend only one wall towards the backyard. It has 4 windows. Vinyl siding. I'm in the Southeast.

  1. did my kitchen last year.prices vary greatly going from about 30 thousand on up.highest estimate i got was about 85 thousand.   get lots of estimates.

  2. it's not really a fair question because the less you expand, the more it will cost per square feet.  Just remember that once you decide on the road to do an addition, the cost difference with expanding a wall 36" is not that much less than taking it out by 60".  Assuming that you don't run into any site issues, factor in a budget of $160-180/ sf. without cabinets, countertops and finishes.
