When replacing some syncros, gears in a transmission what bearings and gaskets should I also replace?

  1. Depends on how much money you have- but minimum would be all the cluster shaft needles, Primary input shaft bearing and needles. Then would dry test the big bearing and then wet test them. If they are not smooth-they should go to. If you are unsure take the parts to a tranny shop for a second opinion. Be ready to jump back if their answers don't make sense. They are in the business to sell you a repair or parts. Your price of parts can quickly get to the point a replacement trans is cheaper. You didn't say what trans this is -some need so many special tools they are not worth trying to do your self. VW old beetle comes to mind but the rabbit was a snap. So each had it's own story.


  2. when I'm doing a job, gaskets are always a must replacement, no question.  What bearings you replace should be determined by wear.  If they were easy to get to and showed wear, they would come out and be replaced if I was doing the job.
