Just came across this guy - www.offinia.com - listing valid ways to get out of jury duty. It might be "unconstitutional" but it can't help to know!! ;-)

A good book to read...I've four times and never been selected yet to actually sit on a jury.

Really only yourself, but it won't hurt to bring a notepad and pencils in case you want to take notes.  The selection process is pretty boring, I usually bring a book for breaks and things but the judge wants you paying attention during the process.  Notebooks also come in handry for drawing or writing while you're listening to the boring stuff, just pretend like you're taking notes.

What not to bring:  check your pockets or purse to be sure you aren't carrying your pepper spray or pocket knife...I always have one or the other when I go down to the courthouse for any reason and end up having to hike them back out to the car.  My mom got nailed for having nail clippers once...just be sure you don't have anything that might even remotely be used as a weapon...

Newspaper or something else to read. Money for lunch,and for something to drink.

Bring the following:

* Your summons (already filled out if there are questions on it)

* A pen and scratch paper (just in case you have to write other things, such as courtroom number so that you remember where to return after lunch)

* Photo ID (although many courts do not check ID)

* Bottle of water or other drink

* Small lunch, esp. if there are no restaurants nearby

* Small snacks

* Change for vending machines

* A book or magazine

Be sure to ask the deputy if you may use the restroom before the judge enters so that you do not need to interupt the questioning in order to use it.  Generally breaks are only every 2 hours.
