  1. Do you have any water treatment system for your house?  If so you do not want to water the garden or lawn with water that has been softened.  Can you tap into your main water source before it goes into your house and run plastic piping or PVC pipes to your back yard?  It is a little more work, but worth the extra time and expense.

  2. what you want is a freeze proof silcock

  3. A biggie that has been overlooked before,,, make sure you have the cold water line, NOT THE HOT.

That's all.  Everything else has been addressed by others

  4. Other than the obvious - "Know how to do plumbing," you need to be aware of the possibility of a siphon backflow if you are using the outdoor tap for a hose.  If you put the hose in a bucket of soap water and the water pressure drops the hose could siphon the soapy water back into the pipes giving a nasty surprise when you go to boil water for spaghetti.

It's really not a joke when you think of the same thing happening if you are out spraying an insecticide or weed killer with a hose end sprayer.

You can buy an anti-siphon tap for your outside connection so that it does not hapen.

    Good luck!

  5. I assume that you want an outside hose hookup.  When you go to the home improvement store to get your supplies, ask them to show you the outside faucet that is specifically made to prevent freezing.  It has a longer stem that goes through the wall and turns off the tap on the inside of your house so there is no water standing in the pipe close to the outside.  Make sure you have a cutoff on the inside to cut it off in the winter or for future servicing.
