Question:

When selecting a political candidate how important is it on whether or not a candidate like hockey or not?

I'm asking this since I just heard that John McCain's VP pick was also a hockey mom. Personally, I look more for substance and experience than whether or not they like the same things I like in food, sports, etc.

There are plenty of people out there who vote on for such shallow reasons, same s*x, same race, same likings, etc.

You're thoughts?

  1. For all the Canadians. Stephen Harper loves hockey. So it is no longer important to me.

  2. Sadly, a lot of people do base their votes on trivial things, such as whether a candidate likes hockey.  Even more sad, the people that don't vote at all.  This is how idiots like J-Dub end up in office.

It's hard to vote on what the candidates say during their campaign.  You know they'll promise just about anything to get elected.  But will they actually come through with said promises?  The best way to see how effective a candidate will be is to look at what they've done for their respected states.  Granted a country is harder to delegate, but you can gain an idea about what kind of leader they'll be if they have done good and effective things for their states.

I, too, don't feel our president is either candidate.  I was ready for a woman, and a Clinton to boot.  But that's just me.

  3. Honestly I couldn't care less if they liked hockey or not.Ed Rendell is a huge Iggles fan but I wouldn't vote for him if he got me season tix to the Birds.I also don't vote for a person because a bunch of celebrities tell me who their supporting. Why do i care if Oprah or Steven Spielberg likes a certain candidate or not?I vote for the best candidate I feel will help our country, unfortunately I feel, its not one of the 2 we have to choose from.

  4. Like you said, it's no different from voting for a person based on their race or s*x.  You tend to vote for someone who has at least some of the same ideals as yourself, especially when left with a choice of choosing the lesser of two evils, not the best person for the job.

  5. In Canada, we are likely to have our next election on October 14th.  Yes, that fast, with that little amount of warning.

And all candidates up here love hockey, or they will not only be voted out, but tarred and feathered as well.

I will vote for the Conservatives because they have gotten more done in 2.5 years than the Liberals did in over 12 years in power.  More would have been done, but the Conservatives have a minority gov't and that means good ideas can still be shot down just because the Liberals and NDP like to play political games to make the Conservatives look bad.

  6. No, I would vote for the person with the most integrity. Green Party for me!!

On a side note, this question would not make sense in a Canadian federal election. It would be political suicide if a candidate said, "I do not watch or enjoy hockey." Anyone know how I can forge that out of Harper's mouth?

Seriously, if I was American, I still wouldn't vote for her because 1) I'm not a big fan of Republicans, 2) the country needs a change. It was the same thing with Canada and 12 years of Liberal power; and I'm a Liberal! After a while, you need a change to start balancing things out in the long term because of the different party philosophies. I hate Harper and wanted Layton to win in the last election (Stephane Dion's not a leader), but at least Harper has done things to fix Chretien's mistakes, and if we do end up getting a new Prime Minister in the fall, that PM will fix Harper's major mistakes and create new ones for the next one to fix. It's a cycle. After eight years of Republican (...okay, a monkey in the form of Bush) and another eight years of Democrat before that, whoever won the Democrat race would win the presidency.

  7. it doesn`t really matter if they liked what u like it would just be cool if they did

  8. Not that I would vote for her because McCain is just a Bush nodder and destined to follow the same reckless path but on the other hand it is a relief to find out anyone in politics actually enjoys something us common people like. It is shameful anyone would vote for someone based on any shallow ideals but sadly it happens (I am an independent voter and proud to say I vote for the person that most closely lies to me toward my ideals). I am guessing if you put a hockey puck in front of most American politicians they would think is was some sort of oversized beverage coaster with a "neat" design on it. So while in the grand scheme of politics and my personal vote (always vote....it is your right and it should be your obligation) it wont matter, I do respect her for at least knowing it is a puck and not a coaster.

  9. It doesn't matter at all.  My favorite sport is baseball, and the current occupant of the White House owned a baseball team, and he's horrible.

Forty years of liberalism? You mean Nixon, Reagan, the Bushes, Gingrich, Cheney? I think you've been out in that Arizona sun too long.

Also, Winnipeg wants its team back.

  10. It has no bearing on my vote

I vote based on a combanation of party, experience, platform and who's the best for the job

My vote will be going for Obama
