And can you bring your family with you if you are stationed overseas in a place other than a battlezone? I am 36 and thinking about joining the Corps, do you know the answers to these two specific questions?

  1. Call a local Naval Station and ask for the JAG office. You may have to make an appointment, but you should be able to talk to a JAG officer.

You have a selection of duty stations, but not a choice. The choice is determined by "the needs of the Navy." If someone transfers, someone else fills that spot. Could be you, maybe not. You make a wish list or a "dream sheet" and often get a choice of 1 or 2 places, then you decide. Sometimes it's 1 "choice".

The more junior you are, the more jobs there are. As you progress, your choices decrease since you handle bigger groups of people or take on more responsibilities.

Also, check on the age restrictions. You must be eligible to serve 20 years when you join.

  2. You have a choice but not the final say.  You have to go where they tell you although you can give your opinion and sometimes that works.  There are only a few places where you cannot take your family.  There are stations overseas where you can take your family.

  3. you go where you are sent..and the higher up the ladder you go, the fewer choices you have.

there are only a couple Unaccompanied Duty stations in the Navy.  Diego Garcia, and Souda Bay are two.  even Bahrain will allow dependents once in awhile now.
