What are some things that I want to make sure are done/said?

  1. get the settlement in writing first. Do not send them any $$$ till you do. Then never give them access to your checking account. Pay as agreed to terms. Then once completed wait 45 days and then pull your own credit file at annualcreditreport.com and make sure it shows settled and a zero balance. If not then dispute the reporting with the 3 creditreporting companies with the letter and proof of payment and it will report correctly after that.

  2. I would just make sure that everything is in writing and keep it..Especially if you are settling the debt for less than what is owed.  Debt collectors can be very annoying and can easily confuse you.  Good luck..
