  1. It is a good idea to alway let up off the gas when shifting Automatics, no matter the setting.

D1 and D2 are just like shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear on a manual.  If you don't let off the gas, u have a spinning part connecting to a spinning part....u will hear a load WHROOM while they try to connect, and lots of wear and tear result.

Generally, just leave ur automatic in it's highest D setting and let the car take care of it for you.  It will shift up thru all the D settings by itself.  To get a feel for that, give it good hard gas on a back road, u will feel the shifting going on.  The only time u need to shift down to lower D settings is if u are in very hilly areas...in which case u might want to take control, using the lower D settings.

  2. Why are you shifting an automatic? They are automatic for a reason. To answer your question though, no. You don't have to release the accelerator pedal, but you dropping it into a lower gear and your rpms are going to increase, if your still on the gas it will higher the rpms. Not to mention your going to over work you torque converter like that.

  3. Why would you want to shift when it's automatic? The car does it for you.

But in answer to your question, no, you don't have to let up on the gas when shifting an automatic car. But you should not be giving it gas when you put the car in park or reverse. You should be at a dead stop.
