Some say early spring and definitely NOT before winter. It seems to me that applying lime in the fall w/b good for the soil as it overwinters.

  1. any time after columbus day, before thanksgiving or first freeze over, you are right about over winter when the plants are dormant, they do not stop completely growing, but still absorb nutrients cfor the spring growth cycles

  2. If you subscribe to the Scott's lawn news letter, they will tell you when to put what ever on your lawn based on your zip code and type of grass you have.  It make it easy.

    Good Luck
