First time I have grown potatoes in very large bin with lots of dirt. The plants are very long and have some blossoms that have died off and others that are just starting. There are a few tiny (red) potatoes just under the surface but should I leave them for as long as I can, and then dig them up. Since they are on the porch in this container, I don't know how long I should leave them. None of the branches are anywhere near dying off yet.

  1. My book said "Lift early potatoes as required and Main crop can be lifted for storage when the leaves have died down.

Another book said start to harvest potatoes when the flowers have died off.  Hope this helps.

  2. you usually harvest them when the flowers have finished. lift one and try, you may find they are larger further down. some varieties may only produce small potatoes.

  3. Well, what i would recommend is that you should check on them every day. Once you see no difference in size change, dig those babies up!

    Hope this helps!

also make sure they are ripe by cutting one in half, if the inside is green don't dig them up!
