I will be traveling to the UK this Sept 2008. Should I exchange my US dollars ahead of time? What is the exchange rate likely to do on the next 3 months?

  1. the first answerer is wrong ... we still use the British Pound Sterling. Euro's are not accepted here.

  2. Oh let me tell you this go to www.xe.com and check them daily. I am going on Wednesday and I found this place to have the best exchange rate. Way better then the airport. I also would check with American Express online you can order your currency there too.

  3. the British pound does not exist any longer it is the Euro that you will be changing to.  There is no way of knowing what the exchange rate will be in Sept, the world will have to wait and see.  Personally I would maybe change just a small amount of Dollars over to the Euro then when I get into the Airport in the U.K.  I would change the rest of the dollars into Euro there, you will get a better rate, because there is no bank fees.

  4. Generally, if you go to a currency exchange agency, they're going to charge you a fee. Head to your bank and get about 30 pounds for your first day. Then use an ATM, unless you're going to get a massive fee.

When I wanted to do a currency exchange whilst in the UK, I would go to a post office which did it for free. I don't know if they do US dollars, though. I think they do, but I was only changing from pounds to euros, so I can't be certain.

  5. The British Pound does still exist !

I find when I travel is to take a small amount of cash with you to get you there. Change it over when you get to the airport, although you do have to pay a fee to do that. I then use my ATM card to withdraw cash once I am there. The bank fee's by doing this are a lot cheaper than dealing with currency exchange places or hotels. Plus you get a much better exchange rate via the bank.

I have never had a problem using my ATM card - usually as long as it has the PLUS Logo on the back
