Question:

When should I file CA unemployment claims?

I was recently let go by my company and haven't found a job as yet. However I did manage to get a part-time consulting gig (10 hours a week). Should I already file a claim with EDD for unemployment benefits already, or only after my consulting gig is over? I want to try and maximize my benefits in case I am unable to find a real job soon.

  1. File immediately.  Just make sure to tell them about the part-time income.

Edit:  If you get more than you need, just bank it for later.  The freelance income won't be used in your basic benefit calculations since self-employment income doesn't qualify for unemployment benefits.  Delaying can possibly cause some income on the other end to "fall off the table" which could actually reduce your benefits.

  2. The sooner the better.
