When should I hire a wedding planner?

Never hurts to go for it now.  It all depends how the planner bills.  hourly or on the wedding total.  And it depends what help you need.

If you can handle most of the legwork like hiring vendors and reserving the ceremony site, then a month or two before the wedding is more affordable and relieves you of that duty. My friend (despite the fact that she had the money to hire one for a year) got a wedding planner a month before her $70K wedding. The planner charged about $1K. She was in charge of making sure everyone got paid the day of her wedding and took care of a lot of things!!

It depends on how much you want from the planner in terms of his/her involvement.  If you need help selecting venues and such you should hire him/her now because you typically need to book things like this a year in advance or more.  Some people only want help with creative details or even day-of stuff so it is a personal decision.  Most planners have different pricing packages you can choose from depending on how involved you would like them to be.
