Question:

When should I introduce my 2 cats to a new mother cat and her kittens I just adopted?

I recently took in a pregnant stray and the day after I took her in she had 6 kittens. I have kept the mommy and kittens secluded in a spare bedroom, away from my other 2 cats. The kittens are 2 weeks and 3 days old. My 2 cats know there is something in that room and are very curious when I go in and out. When would it be ok to introduce my 2 cats to the mommy and kittens?

  1. After you have had both the mother and babies checked out by a vet. The mother cat will be very protective so I

would wait until the kittens are weened before making introductions.

  2. Whatever else you do get the mom and babies to the vet like now. They need a check up and Mom needs shots to make sure they don't infect your other two kitties.  This happens very frequently especially when you adopt a feral kitty. Not that they don't deserve and need your help but you also have to protect your other kitties.

Good luck to you with this venture and I am so proud of you and others out there that do this fostering or adopting.

The kittens will need to be wormed and given their first shots at 2 months of age. They can be neutered/spayed at 3 months. Good luck to you again.

  3. after the kittens are weaned. about 8 weeks.

do it before they can walk, and mom will attack the other cats.

do it as soon as they can walk, mom wont care, but the kittens will annoy the other cats, because they think they are mom,and will get belted.

  4. I would wait until they are six to eight weeks old. You can start now, though, by taking some bedding that they sleep on and letting your 2 cats get used to their smell. Also take some of your 2 cats bedding and place it with the new mommy cat. When you do introduce them to each other, it would be best if you could do it with a crate. Put the mommy and kittens in a crate and bring your two cats in and let them smell each other. Do this for about a week. Then let them spend a few minutes with each other and watch carefully. It also helps if you start feeding them in the presence of each other (separate bowls). There will be some hissing but this is how cats establish dominence. Never leave them alone until they eat calmly in front of each other. Good luck and good for you for rescuing those kitties!

  5. It's still a little early for "introductions".  The kittens are too young.  Even the gentlest of Mom Cats can quickly become hostile and aggressive when she has young kits and "strangers" approach.

You should also have Mom checked out by a vet for any infectious diseases before she has contact with the rest of your home and your cats.

Good Luck and you are a good person to take in Mom Cat!
