When should I neuter my two kittens?

I have two males, both born in late April this year. I want to get them neutered before they start doing that terrible "spraying" thing.

  1. I had my tomcat done at three months. I have heard that the younger they do them the better. If you have them done young a vet said that they stay kittens forever. (mentally not physically)

  2. Old school goes by the 6 month rule.  Shelters started doing it sooner because most of the kittens they adopted under good faith the owner would have them done when they were ready never came back for surgery. The new policy is when males weigh at least 2 pounds and 3 pounds for females. Your guys should be ready now so if your vet approves, go ahead and have it done.

  3. Not all males spray.  I'd wait until the 6th month mark.  You can do it earlier though.

  4. Male cats are usually neutered between 5 1/2 and 9 months of age

  5. A kitten can be neutered pretty much as early as he is weaned, actually. Most vets will do it around 5-6 months, but I had my three month old kitten neutered this past Friday. He did really great with the anesthesia, didn't seem to be in pain at all, and was back to normal the next day. If I had to do it again, I definitely would. The only problem I had was keeping him from playing and jumping around right when I got him home, but he seemed to know his limitations. There's no harm in waiting until 5-6 months, but I wanted to get it done before I went back to work at the end of this month, and I knew it wouldn't harm him to be neutered so young.

Out of the six vets I asked, half of them would do it at 3 months. The other half said 6.
