I was notified from SS that I would be receiving survivor benefits next month.I heard that most people receive theirs on the first or third day of the month. They said I wouldn't receive mine until the 6th or 7th. They would go by my husbands birth date. What is the reason that determines when you receive them?

  1. Usually the social security number or birth date of the qualifying party - your husband.

  2. Usually insurance companies use a birth-date as a reference date for allocation of benefits. It is part of an underwriting process. It can be a waiting or elimination period imposed on the policy that was taken out by the government. It can also be a way of reinsurance, which is a procedure where the insurance company sorta sells off a portion of their liability for a loss. They set a time to pay based on when they expect to get paid.

  3. Social Security splits the month into thirds. When you will receive your payment is based on when your husband's birth date occurs within the month. See the link below for exact dates.
