I am going to be a junior in high school this year and I run track and field and my coach is pressuring me into figure out what college I want to go to. I haven't taken my SAT's yet so that is the only thing that I don't have to offer to the coach. Also how do I contact them?

  1. The important thing about contacting colleges is just getting your name out there so don't worry if you haven't taken your SAT yet. Now would be a perfect time to start doing so because your options are still wide open and therefore you can get interest from a wide range of schools.

If there are specific schools that you are interested in and want to find out more about then you should focus on them. On most school's athletic web-sites on the track and field page there is a link to the coach's e-mail. Just send some coaches e-mails letting them know that you are interested and so you get the ball rolling. If they are looking for SAT scores just tell them you haven't taken them yet, but as soon as you do you will let them know. If they are interested in you they will definitely let you know, it won't be some sort of game. You can tell them how you have done up to this point in your career and what your goals and outlook is for the future.

You should let your high school coach know which colleges you are thinking about so he/she can talk to the coaches as well. You should also ask your high school coach if he/she has any suggestions on colleges were they think you would fit well. It is important to remember, though, that you still have 2 years left so while this is prime time for scoping out colleges you don't need to make a decision for a long time and so you have plenty of time to think about it and consider everything.

Also remember that when picking the school, the track program shouldn't be the #1 factor in your decision. You go to college to get an education, keep that in mind. I know it may be hard with the glamour of college athletics. And of course, good luck with the rest of your high school career, your college search and with your continued success in college. I hope it works out for you well no matter where you decide on.
