Question:

When should I start handling my new pet lizard?

I bought a long-tailed grass lizard about a week ago, and I'm entirely new to caring for reptiles. She's not very big, I suspect she is a juvenile. She seems to have gotten fairly used to her new home and is healthy, active, and pretty friendly. Anyways, I heard that they become tame very quickly and now I'm wondering if it would be okay to actually pick the lizard up and pet it now, or if I should give her more time to adjust to her new surroundings. Thanks for taking the time to read this, all answers are greatly appreciated and a big help.

  1. I love these kind of lizards.  They are beautiful.  My advice is handle him .  but do not actually pick him up ever.  Put one hand in the tank and coax him on to your hand with your other hand.  Then lift him out.  If you actually try to hang on to it then it will not ever tame.  I love their long tails.  I am sure he is well adapted to his surroundings.  He may be hard to catch at first.    My advice is to make sure that the first time you pick him up do it in a small room.  Try to have a friend nearby in case the little guy does run.  and move slow.  Oh yeah one more thing make sure there are no cats around.  I love cats, but if that little guy of yours takes off running, all a cat sees is a long string to chase.  Constant interaction will tame him.

  2. You should only hold him when you have to. Holding/Carrying is very stressful and can kill your lizard. Look at him, but if you want him to live a fufilled life dont hold him. Oh Ya, Lizards are not to pet there to look at. If you wanted a petting pet you should have a cat or dog.

To Pika Pow .... Why would you go through that much truble to hold her. There cool TO LOOK AT.

U dont have to listen to me but id hate for you to accidently let it go.
