I know it is traditional to get a gift for the mother of the bride but when is the best time to give that gift to her? Also is it traditional to buy a gift for the mother of the groom?

  1. Well I gave my bridesmaids and maid of honor there gift the night of the rehearsal dinner which was the night before the wedding!! anytime is a good time, even before the ceremony would be nice ..make your own traditions :)

  2. There are lot fewer 'rules' about weddings than you seem to think. Basically the rules are the same as for any other large dressy party. There isn't any "official list" of who enters the room before whom, who must pay for what, etc. Every set of families works these details out changing the wedding format to fit the particular families, not trying to change the families to fit some pre-conceived template.

It is a very rare etiquette situation indeed when it would improper to show someone appreciation or caring by sending them a gift. The only exception is bringing gifts to the wedding. It just creates a pain in the neck for the hosts trying to keep track of who gives what and to make sure the stuff doesn't get stolen. Send a gift to someone's home before or after the wedding. (I send a week AFTER and match my generosity to the care shown for my own convenience and comfort. Treat me uncaringly and your nice silver soup toureen might turn into a brass elephant statuette.)

  3. It is not customary to do this but it should be done in private. Probably the morning of the wedding. You would NOT do it at the rehearsal as some people said above.

  4. We got both of our parents gifts and gave it to them at the rehearsal dinner. I wanted to get something extra for my mom for all the help and support - but I didn't want to give it to her in front of anyone else or make anyone feel bad. So, after the rehearsal dinner I presented her with a gift just me and her. It was a really nice moment and it put me at ease right before I went to bed.

My mom loves figurines and such, so I got her something that meant a lot of her. I think it's adorable...if your mom likes these sort of things:
