i think people usually say what's up when another person says hi or something. and this guy, whenever he sees me. he'll say 'hey whats up?'. but i didnt even say hi to him or approach him in any way. i find that annoying. i thought i was the one who should ask that. since he said hi first. what do you think?

  1. is this really the most pressing question you have?  Etiquette demands that YOU not make someone feel uncomfortable.  Be polite and say "not much" How are you today?  that is all he is trying to say.  Don't get personal about it. it's just an expression of greeting.  He doesn't really want to pry into your business.

  2. Why should you say Hi first, are you that special that only people you acknowledge should be conversing with you?  If I were you I would be flattered that anyone wanted to talk to you as its obvious from you asking this question you are stuck up.  Its just a saying "whats up?"  he could just as easily say "Up yours" as opposed to "whats up"  Im imagining the former would probably be what I would say to you

  3. I agree with skibelle, You are reading too much in to a common greeting, and the other person may want to be better friends...

I say relax in the casual encounters, and if somebody says it to you in a business encounter, then I can see getting a little ruffled.

  4. make your own mind up!

  5. I think it's fine for him to say that.  He's just trying to make conversation.  He wants you to talk.

  6. it doesnt matter just be nice and say hey.

  7. Be polite and say "not much"!!!!

  8. Saying "What's up?" is perfectly acceptable when performing a Buggs Bunny impersonation.
