lar has the right idea, that,s what i do. i check everything out and make sure everything is working like it should. looking at the plugs can give you a pretty good idea how the rest of the engine is working, like valves, valve seals, and rings.

A tune up should be done, according to my standards, once a year, whether you need it or not.  It should consist of changing air filters and gas filters.  It should consist of thoroughly checking all the belts and fluid levels and changing the plugs.  Then go back through the book you got when you bought the car and see if there are any more.
