i just got a new parakeet and he is just sitting on his perch or on the floor going to the bathroom and not eating his food or playing with his toys. when i try to feed him he does not take the food only 1 seed thats it. when i saw him at the pet store he was flying around and acting like he was having fun with all of the other birds. and when i took him and they put him inside of the box that had airholes in it you could hear him walking around and flaping his wings. whats wrong with my parakeet and how long will it take him to get used to his surroundings? and also what should i do to help him. and if i try to take him out of the cage will he bite me? if yes will it hurt? and what kind of shampoo should i use on him use on him. and how often should i bathe him?

  1. MAYBE BOUT A FEW WEEKS N IF THAT DOESNT WORK OUT MAYBE IT NEEDS A PARTNER TO PLAY W/

  2. hi, i'm an owner of 2 parakeets myself. well of course your parakeet was happy at the pet store, he was surrounded by other birds! just wait a few weeks until he gets ajusted to the new surroundings.don't worry abut him not eating, eventually he'll get hungry and he'll come down to eat.don't try taking him out of the cage just yet, he could get hurt if he tris to fly around, wait until he's comfortable in the new surroungings. of course it would hurt if he bites you! NO SHAMPOO on the bird because you could mess up the feathers in some way. just spritz him for now.

  3. DON"T use any kind of shampoo  at ALL!!!!1    Every once in a while, if you want, you can take a spray bottle, put it on mist, and gently spray him 5-6 times.       Maybe you could get another budgie for him, if he keeps this up, saying that he was happier with other birds.   If you keep taking him out ( chances are, he will bite ) then he will get used to you, and start to chirp, and be more happy,  make sure, if he does bite you, that you don't pull away, even though it hurts, and you can't put him bake in his cage.  If you give him lots of love, and play with him every day, it might take 7 days - 7 weeks ( unlikely).  It's all up to you.  Makew sure he doesn't feel too crowded with toys, but make sure you have at least 2 toys in his cage.  Make sure to clip his wings ( bring him to a vet, or a pet store, before you try it yourself ) .  Eventually he will get hungry and come down to eat.

I wish you good luck with your new addition to your family!

  4. NO SHAMPOO!!!

Once he gets used to you which could take a couple of weeks spray him gently with a water bottle spritzer thingy.

Everyday talk to him in a Gentle calm voice adn avoid yelling or making sudden sounds or movements around him.

At night put a towel over the cage to make it nice adn dark for him.

Also you might want to try putting some spray millet in his cage after he starts eating his normal seed.

He will start eating once he gets hungry enough.

Also put some cuttlebone in there too.

    Hope i Helped

  5. oh no! please tell me  that you have more than one parakeet in the house, because if you don't, you definitely need to buy another one or it will get very depress .because they are not suppose to live alone.. i have 3 of them, and i made a terrible mistake of only buying 1 before i bought the other 2..

The first one i bought i had him for a couple of months before i got the others, i was told by a professional that i should have never just have him alone for all that time, having  him alone  really damage him mentally.

also do not take him out of his cage as of yet, let him get use to your voice a little bit longer, if you take him out it will bite you . and some of their bites can hurt pretty bad. so please try to get another one.

    take care.
