When should we expect to get the unemployment extension?

My unemployment runs out this week. The new unemployment extension bill is currently on the Senate floor. If the Senate and Mr. Bush approve, when can I expect to see the balance hit my account. I'm just trying to get an idea of a timeframe.

  1. It should be soon, but even if it runs out you will still be eligible....and to the above answer who said never, shame on that person, we are in a recession and people are losing jobs left and right and that good ole "Radio Shack" job is not readily available right now.....keep looking and dont worry it will come...Good Luck

  2. I remember when they extended it in 2003.  Once the President signs it, it will take effect within weeks.

The Senate THANKFULLY approved it tonight before going on a 10 day 4th of July vacation (must be nice).  It will go to the President by next week.  If he doesn't drag his feet (and I don't think he will because he is almost out of money for the war), he will sign it and you should get a letter within 2-3 weeks to start calling in for your extended benefits.

Good luck in finding a job!

  3. Mine just ran out too this week, so thanks for asking the question.  And as for "Radio Shack"  that's working hard and not smart.  If your family can't live off of a Radio Shack salary your time is better spent locating a job that will pay what you lost while you are on unemployment.  Just because you are on unemployment insurance doesn't mean you aren't working hard.  I have been working hard since 7 months ago to land a decent job and tightening up my skills to be competitive.  When my unemployment runs out and if I have to get a job like Radio Shack then I'm not afraid to do it. (Which it has) The time working at Radio Shack is just the time you need to find a better paying or at least same paying job like what you lost.  I use to think like that when my husband was laid off (oh just get a job at Staples) but when I got laid off I saw his point.  Work Smart and not Hard!

  4. hopefully never.. sorry don't take this personally..

but it comes back down to the old standard.. if all else fails lower your standards.. i have worked at radio shack when times were bad!!

that extension is coming out of the social security fund.. which we already know doesn't have enough cash in it!

  5. There was action on the extended unemployment bill last night in the Senate

The Senate approved the 13 week extension last night before going on vacation

It will go to the President by next week. If he doesn't drag his feet (and he probably

won't he will because he is almost out of war money), he will sign it and you should

get a letter within 2 weeks to start calling in for your extended benefits.

    Here are the criteria !

    It's 13 extra weeks long

You must have worked at least 20 weeks before getting laid off

This is approved for all states.

Must have exhaused your regular unemployment within 1 year ( I believe, I read somewhere it was after Nov 06 but I'm

not sure about that without reading further.

I suggest we all email and call all those in the House and Senate that willingly voted for this and thank them , We all complain when they do bad things We should show our appreciation when they do whats right. And I don't want to hear from anyone complaining about handouts or other B.S your opinions are worthless and I dont respect the source or your right to spout them to people who are financially burdened And all I can do for you is hope you lose your job someday so you can see how it feels, and when you do think back to when you wrote your nasty B.S to all the people here who are really hurting. My father used to say " If you don't have something good to say then say nothing at all" Thats what smart people do. We wouldn't be in this situation if we didn't export all our manufacturing jobs to China and other 3rd world countrys. Yes it all revolves around Buying from China and nothing more (Thru Walmart and the remaining bunch like them ) So if you want your jobs back eventually start reading the tags on the items you buy, And don't be fooled by the words "Assembled in the USA" That means it was made in China and put together in the U.S . Usually because they can't be trusted to build anything that lasts. The reason China's economy is booming is because of Manufacturing the jobs we once had. When you buy from China you take another job from the U.S and give it to someone in China. Unity is where it's at ! If everyone refused to buy foreign made c**p we wouldn't be in this situation. Did you ever buy an Item only to find it didn't work right out of the box ? China, Lead paint, Poisened pet food the list is endless. And you know the good old U.S government when they start saying the economy is "Down" were screwed it's 100 times worse in reality than what they tell you. ! I truely hope this added money saves some of you from losing your cars and homes, And use the time to try to find something or move to where there is work in your field temporarirly.

  6. The last time I collected the Unemployment Extension was back in 1993. It was a really hard year. There weren't any jobs and the temporary agencies I used to go to were all going out of business. I haven't seen it so bad until now. No work. The ticket to getting a job these days is to have skills that no one else has. Unemployment is much higher than the statistics are showing us. Many people drop of the percentages when they run out of benefits. The way it worked back then was that if you were getting benefits, when they ran out they automatically ran into the extension. Back in 1993 I was lucky to find a job before the extension ran out. Another very good option to extend beyond the extension is to enter into a training program. Many states will extend your benefits for the program and you will learn new skills which can help make you more comptetitive out there to find a job. To those who say, just get any old job...well you should definately do something to make money to feed your family. Sell things on ebay or get a job that won't affect your ability to find a job. But I think the best resource is yourself (to quote Warren Buffet). Improve your skills and keep looking. It's easy to get depressed. Don't give into negative thoughts, just keep going. I'd tell you that if you were even the least bit computer saavy, go to the library, get a "teach yourself book" for FLASH CS3 and download a trial version on your computer for 30 days. If you can learn this, than you will have a job since the market is flooded with openings and not enough people know this stuff or CS3 or any of these things. The best thing you can do if find the area where they need people and be one of those people. In my state Education is free for the unemployed, so I am signing up for the graphics program. The state will give me 30 credits for free! I have to pay for books and labs, but it's a free Associates Degree to get an in demand job. There is also a $4,000. grant available to people who want to go to school (Federal) that if your state still has the money, can send you..and extend you benefits at the same time. You are literally paid to learn. So let's have hope! It's a technological world. If you can find your way into it and into the future, than you can find the needs of the future, fill them and never have to go this way again. I'm sorry I didn't learn more when my former company was willing to pay for it. I was lazy and now I'm the one out of work. I've been out of work since November. It's one of the hardest lessons I've had to learn about saving and learning new technology. I won't pass this way again. Good luck everyone!
