  1. Depends what type of cake you are having. For a traditional cake it would take at least 4 weeks to make, so needs to be ordered at least 4-6 weeks in advance. My fiance and I are going with an Asian wedding cake (which the cake shop said only need to be ordered 2 days in advance!). The Asian wedding cake has fresh creams in it and doesn't last that long, so can't be made too much in advance anyway.

By all means, decide early, and find out at the time what is the number of days or weeks the particular baker will need to make the cake.

  2. Its really up to you.  We found our baker over a year in advance!!  We did our caking tasting 11 months in advance.  And are ordering it today, which is 9 months in advance.  :)

  3. 3-5 months before the wedding...

Make a cake design and tasting appointment..  Taste various cake combinations (If you have a specific flavor combo in mind tell them so they can have it ready for you along with their other varieties)..

When doing your tasting try everything,  even if some of the combos don't sound good you may be pleasantly surprised...

  4. this will depend upon who you want to have make your cake.

I contacted the company from that "Ace of Cakes" TV show and in June 2008 they booked my appointment for a tasting/consult in October 2008 and are holding a space for my wedding date in October 2009.

I talked to a popular store that only does wedding cakes - - they advised me 9 - 12 months otherwise they may be booked.

My local bakery that also does wedding cakes said they could accomodate me in as little as 4 - 6 weeks.
