I have an acoustic guitar and I am wondering when I should change my strings. I am having trouble getting the strings to tune to the right notes. I almost broke a string. What should I do?

  1. if your strings have been on too too long then they will eventually build up this black gunk and it hurts really bad when you play especially if you slide and bend, even if you have calises already.

  2. if the strings won't stay in tune properly then you should probably buy some new ones. if you play guitar every day for an hour or so, then you should probably change them about every month just so the guitar will sound it's best and stay in tune. look into Elixir guitar strings. they have a very light coating over the strings so they'll last longer

  3. A cheap set of strings should be good for a few months.  Nicer ones last longer.

Really bad strings could cause tuning problems, but more often when I have these kinds of problems I find it's ether operator error or there's some issue with the guitar... If the tuners are slipping, it can cause similar problems.  Also, check the pegs at the bridge & make sure they're secure.

  4. when ur guitar becomes out of tune quickly its time to change ur strings, the type of strings depends on ur style, if u want an inbetween rock and soft sort of sound(depending on ur amp settings anf fx settings) i suggest d darrio strings, they'll last u a while for electric guitars and if its achoustic then Elixirs, very nice strings last a really long time and have a beautiful sound. if u have never changed ur strings then u shood ask someone who knows has played for a while to help u and ask him/her about a string winder, tht will save lots o' time   good luck   - jake
