When should you cut back a climbing rose?

I have a climbing rose and now the branches have gotten long and it has stopped blooming for the summer, when and how much should I cut it back in order to have a pretty climbing rose next year?

  1. Roses should not be pruned until July (Southern Hemisphere) & I guess January (Northern Hemisphere) as it's advisable to wait until growth is dormant during winter and before Spring growth begins. Cut it back to near the previous years pruning, or to a manageable height. Roses left unpruned become weeds and hard to control.


  2. With a climbing rose you can pretty much cut it back anytime. Prune through the year whenever you need too cutting off those unruly branches.  In winter you can prune it hard, but apart from that, just trim it when it needs it.
