When should you give a puppy a haircut?

We have an almost 4 month puppy ... peke-a-tese ; His hair is sort of thin...is that his puppy hair..or will it be the same as an adult? Also, we wana give him a cut, just not sure what kind, and if too soon...any suggestions or comments are appreciated. thanks

You can neaten him up anytime as long as you don't cut all the hair off during winter. I assume you mean pekengese?

He may still have his puppy coat which is very soft and fine.

Feed him a good dog food like Canidae Natural, Timberwolf Organic, etc. or a raw diet to ensure a healthy full coat as well as all round health and longevity.

Your profile is set private so we can't see any pics.  If you are talking about taking the pup to a groomer, all the shots should be complete, including the Bordatella vaccine to prevent Kennel Cough.  If you are doing it a home, go ahead and clip away.  The younger he gets use to it, the better.

You won't know what kind of fur your puppy will have, as it is not a pedigreed dog. He could look like either, or neither, of his parents. Get him groomed when you are uncomfortable with the length of his hair.

as long as he's up to date on his shots, take him NOW.  The earlier you get him used to scissors and clippers, the better the groomer will do. and usually dogs who give the groomer a harder time, have a higher bill because it takes mroe time and energy.  Take him nowwwww and even if its just for a trim, take him again in a couple weeks.  The groomer will LOVE you for it, I promise.  :)
