When should you pick avocados?

I have an avocado tree in my back yard. I picked an avocado about 3 or 4 days ago and it's still hard. There are several on the tree but I don't know if they're in season. I live in Southern California.

  1. hey, i have a couple of avocado trees in my backyard too, and i also live in so cal. i decided to cut them about a week ago before the colder part of winter begins, although it doesnt get too cold here, its better to prevent than to have them freeze if it gets too cold at some point. if they are not ripe yet, you can put them in a paper bag with a banana, bananas release ethene which make fruits ripen faster. try that. good luck with your avocados. also, let them be of good size.

  2. If avocados are harvested when they are not ripe they will never ripen to the quality that you find in good fruit store even if you put  them in ethylene (the same gas produced by ripening fruit).  It may soften but usually just rot without having the taste of a fully ripened avocado. It is the idiosyncracy of this fruit . This I found out while living   in the tropics.

  3. JUST LEAVE THEM TO FAIL, EVERY ENVIRONMENT IS F=DIFFERENT AND CAN BE 4OR 5 WEEKS BEFORE COLLECTING

  4. Pick then when they are slightly soft and very juicy. If you pick them and they are not ripe, leave them on a window sill until they get soft.
