  1. I would not break a horse under saddle to ride until it is at least 36 months old. The horse should be thoroughly ground trained as a yearling, longeing, hoof care, bathing, grooming, trailer loading, and basically just learning good in-hand manners. At 2 years old I would gently acclimate the horse to accept the saddle and in addition to longeing I would add long-rein training with saddle on in preparation for riding when the horse is 2 1/2-years-old. With calm bonding and gentle but firm training throughout, the horse will then be fairly easy to mount without forceful breaking under saddle and ready to begin learning leg and body movement cues.

  2. If you can break a horse should'nt you know?

  3. Wow what a question ,,there will be a bunch different answers ,, all  will be right, because thats what they believe in ,,

When we do race colts we break them in fall before their 2 yr old yr

then they get turned out for about 6 months

When I start Just a horse I start him at a very earl age But not ridding

    I do drive him etc

    Then I saddle them

and at late 2yr old I ride

Now not all horse can be ridedin that early,, But you can still break them. then turn them out until they grow up .

    And knees are closed ,,

Some in EUROPE HANDLE THEM AND DO GROUND WORK THEN turn them out for 3 yrs

So there is really no law

Its ethics and your knowledge about horses.. But no younger then 18 months ,,

It's the horse that should be taken as individual ,

  4. breaking and training are 2 different things...

breaking means to "break their spirit" it is done by running them around and around in a round pen until they have no will or energy to fight back.. it is still done by many "cowboy" types..

training takes longer but results in a more complete horse

you should start halter training at 1 month

start lunge line training at 2 years... ground driving may start then as well

some people ride at 2 years but better to wait until 3 or even 4 years...
