When should you upgrade your cars motor mounts? Stock/upgraded at all/only if blown?

In my 03 mustang gt, someone said I should replace the stock rubber motor mounts with polyurethane mounts and that would the engine not move as much and help get more power to the wheels.

Have you heard of this and do you think it is work $200 bucks?

  1. Yes a bit of power is lost through non rigid rubber mounts but they are a bit quieter .~!~

  2. I wouldn't replace the motor mounts in a car unless they needed to be repaired.  As long as they are solid and hold the motor you are fine.

I have run cars over 150K miles and never replaced a motor mount.

Sounds like the mechanic is looking for some extra money

  3. Poly motor mounts will increase the amount of engine noise transmitted to the body of the car.  The performance improvement is minimal if any at all.  Once the rubber mounts compress, all the energy of the engine is transfered to the wheels anyway.

If your stock mounts are worn or broken they need to be replaced.  If they are still in good shape, leave them be.

Worn or broken motor mounts can lead to damage to headers and other exhaust components as the exhaust works to hold the engine in place.  Weak motor mounts can also add stress to the shifter mechanism and transmission mounts.

For better performance, I would spend the $200 elsewhere.

  4. Spend the 200 bucks on something you will get something for, you wouldnt notice any difference from the stock mounts.

  5. the only reason to go to poly motor mounts is if you have done significant engine mods creating a good bit more power than stock. Otherwise if motor mounts are broken/bad replace with stock the only real change you will notice going to poly is more vibration and motor noise in the cab of the vehicle. That .5-1 rwhp you loose to the rubber mounts you will never miss.
