Question:

When signing up for COBRA, am I retroactively covered for the time since my employer-paid insurance ended?

The cover letter said my coverage under employer ended on July 31st, yet the letter wasn't even written until August 4th and postmarked on the 6th. What if I were to need insurance between now and the time I can send my COBRA acceptance letter in? Will COBRA cover me retroactively?

  1. As long as you applied for the COBRA with in 30 days of the date you received the notification, you will not have a break in coverage.

  2. Yes by law it is suppose to but you will be charged for the coverage between that time. You would get a charge for that time to pay and the bill for future coverage you elect.

  3. Yes, but you also retroactively PAY for it.   So you pay the premium for August 1st and Sept 1st.

  4. Your letter should also state the date that you must send in your acceptance or refusal of COBRA and the date that they must receive the premium payment by. As long as you follow those guidelines, your coverage will go retroactive back to the termination of your employer coverage with no break.

  5. Be honest,It is gonna take some time to find the answer for your question.Try to have a look the resource here for reference.http://insurance.online-frees.info/insur...

  6. Right...no gap, but you have 60 days to elect COBRA.  That technically gives you free "contingent coverage" and also gives you time to find individual coverage that may be cheaper if you're healthy and don't have pre-existing conditions that would warrant the COBRA.
