When singing I always end up following the melody even if that's not my part. Any ideas?

When I'm the only one singing I have no problem singing melody but whenever I'm singing with someone else in my ear I always end up following then even though I know as I'm singing it I know it's wrong I can't get myself to move to melody. If I put my fingers in my ears that fixes it but that looks ridiculous and doesn't really work if you're leading worship... Can't afford those expensive ear pieces or w/e. Solution has to be cheap.

  1. i really don't see any solution for that besides practice.  you have to practice your part, by itself, not at the same time as the melody, until you have it down so well that the melody can't distract you.

  2. I have to agree with JD - there is no 'quick-fix' - you just need to practice more.  Make sure you know your part really well before adding any other parts.  You just need to learn to hear your part in your head AS WELL as others parts.  It takes some concentration and coordination but it can be learnt easily enough if you give it time.

If possible, every time you realise you are singing the wrong part - stop and get your part back in your head before you start again.  Is it possible to have your part played or sung by someone else as the others are singing their parts?  That should also help as you will have your own part to follow instead of having to try and pitch it and remember it.

  3. Being able to hold your part, especially when singing in a group with 4 or even 8 part harmony is very difficult. Keep at it though. It comes with practice. But whatever you do, never put your finger to your ear! It doesn't look good.
