My grandson died last friday and the body was found floating in water of the fish pond togther with his friend all three years .The bodies were found by my daughter after fifteen minutes of living the house in the fish pond upside down floating .The bodies were rushed to the nearby clinic but upon arrival were found to have died alog time ago .

My question is should the bodies face upward instead of facedown and why did they float after a shorttime of drowning and why couldn't the bodies sink as what happens in most cases please tell me .

  1. Most bodies will float face down when the person has drowned and will sink to the bottom for a short time. Eventually the bodies will float up because of the chemical gases inside the body. The chemical gases cause the body to bloat and float up the surface. These chemical gases are formed by the bacteria in the body and only happens when the person is dead.

  2. When a person just drowns they will sink to the bottom mostly due to the fact they are fighting the water and breathing heavily A person will generally float to the surface if they are relaxed and are not fighting the water.

I am not sure how long it takes a body to float up to the surface but by the time they float up they have died for many hours. This is due to the build up of gases inside the body after death. The gases will collect in the body and bloat up and swell up the body and cause it to float.

"Floaters" will be generally be face down in the water because the arms will weight the body down, while your lungs are closer to your back, the air in them will roll the body over causing the body to be face down.
