When someone has a permit for a handicap parking...?

What does it tell us about the person who is driving that car? I mean, that what are the requirements a person needs to has in order to get a handicap parking?

I am a part-time security control at parking lots. I have seen some old couples with handicap parking but they can walk perfectly (filling out the spaces for those people who can't walk at all). I just want to make sure. Thank you!!!

  1. Personally, if I were in your position, I wouldn't ask...I would ask them if I could help, and consider it a good deed for the day......

  2. the ticket tells you that these people are deamed to have the ticket for a reason. the reason could be many. a diease, disability, anything like that. my mom has a handicap ticket on her car. she has a disease that eats away at her muscles. sometimes she walks fine and other times she doesn't. if they have a red or blue handicap ticket, they have it for a reason because some kind of office deams it that you need it. so if they have it, they ave it for a reason. no reason to fret over it. :-)

  3. There's a lot of different reasons, and impolite to ask the person. You can have back problems, hip problems, leg problems, or from surgeries that prevents you from walking long distances. They're just not for people in wheel chairs, and Doctors tend to pass them out like candy.

  4. In my state permission to apply for handicapped permits is given by Medical personnel who certify that a need exists. They also state whether it is a "handicap" of short term duration (such as a broken leg)  of for the rest of a person's life.

The permit holder also has a wallet card that is to be carried and can be requested to be shown to authorities.  The driver doesn't have to be the permit holder but if the driver is not then a passenger must be a permit holder

There is a hefty fine for unauthorized use of a handicap parking permit or for parking in a handicap marked space without a permit.

  5. It's not necesarily the fact they can walk fine, it could be their breathing and maybe the fact they may not be able to remember where they were going and remember to try not to be at all judging because some people are not old, and they are handicapped and people who are related to them may be out without them and they tend to be very sensitive about it. You should certainly be more careful of how you say things, and I believe it's not your job to patrol who is in the car rather than if the car has a handicap plate or hanger.

  6. You need to wake up not all people that are handicap will show signs of this.........

  7. My family has a handcap parking permit. My dad drives though, because my mom is the handicap. She uses a walker, and has a short memory, so she couldn't even learn how to drive ever again after her car accident.

So if someones driving te car and they have it hanging from the mirror, if doesn't mean they're the handicaps.

As for the seniors, perhaps their memories aren't all that great as well, or they're just very fragile/brittle with their bones and shouldn't walk around all that much.

There are different reasons for everyone.

  8. My Mom has COPD  she can even rollerblade at times but she has a debilitating disease that may take her.

Not all signs of disabilities are evident.

  9. Some of these are given out to people that cant handle walking or any exertion for long periods of time.  An ex friend of mine father had one due to his heart condition because he couldn't go very far before he would have to rest for a bit.

  10. Well they may have some other illness. Just because they walk fine doesnt mean anything. And alot of times its not the person driving the car its just someone in the car. My husband

has one because he has had 10 surgeries on his knee for a football injury that got infected.

  11. It shouldn't tell you anything about the person driving the car. Are you in a position to determine or judge whether or not someone is allowed to park in a handicapped space? If they have a placard, they're allowed!

I had a friend who lost one foot to diabetes and was legally night blind. She had a drivers license restricted to daylight hours. She also had a handicapped placard. I would sometimes drive her in her car, and use the placard because she tired easily and had difficulty walking, but it wasn't apparent at all.

I remember more than once when SHE was driving, and someone challenged her use of the handicapped space, so she took out and unfolded her white cane...

According to the California DMV: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fas...

Disabled Person Parking Placard or Plates

Who qualifies for a Disabled Person (DP) Parking Placard or DP License Plates

You can get a DP placard or DP plates if you have impaired mobility and a licensed physician, surgeon, physician's assistant, nurse practitioner, or certified nurse midwife certifies your condition. You may also qualify if any of the following conditions exist:

        * Heart or circulatory disease.

        * Lung disease.

        * A diagnosed disease or disorder that significantly limits the use of lower extremities.

        * Specific, documented visual problems, including low-vision or partial-sightedness.

        * The loss, or loss of the use, of one or both lower extremities or both hands.

NOTE: You do not need a doctor’s certification if:

        * You have lost a lower extremity or both hands, and you appear in person at a local DMV office.

        * You currently have a California Disabled Person (DP) Placard, or Disabled Person (DP) or Disabled Veteran (DV) license plates assigned to your vehicle, and the license plate number is entered in part "B" of the Application for Disabled Person Placard or Plates form (REG 195).

    Other medical certification

The disability of a person who has lost, or has lost use of one or both lower extremities or both hands, or who has significant limitation in the use of lower extremities may also be certified by a licensed chiropractor. The blindness of any applicant must be certified by a licensed physician or surgeon, who specializes in diseases of the eye, or by a licensed optometrist.

You do not have to own or drive the vehicle to use your placard.

There is lots more there, Who can get Disabled Veteran (DV) License Plates, Parking privileges for DP placard, DP plates or DV plates , Parking privileges for DP placard, DP plates or DV plates  and Placard abuse and more.

Yoyu get the placard by downloading the pdf here: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg195.h...

  12. Don't be too quick to judge.  There are a lot of problems that aren't immediately obvious.

My mother-in-law has 2 artificial heart valves and 1 reconstructed valve.

She appears to walk fine and she doesn't use a cane or anything, so just looking at her, you wouldn't know what was wrong.

But she has a range of about 500 yards before she has to stop a bit.  If she couldn't use the HC parking, she probably couldn't even get across some parking lots without having to stop.

Now my father-in-law is another issue.  The HC plate is for mom-in-law only - but he is always parking in the blue spots even when she isn't with him.  I think that is jerky.

  13. I am a Geriatric Nurse! Just because the elderly couple you see seem to be functioning with no elment on the particular day you see them doesnt mean they fuction at the copacity on all occasions. I have several references i could make to you about clients but do to HIPPA rules i cant. But i will use my own grandmother as an example. Some days you may see her and thing there is nothing wrong with her... but other days you might find yourself thinking how you can prevent yourself from ever being in her position! She has sever knee and back problems from working on concrete floors at a local Wal- Mart for over 20 years and when she has her epideral shots in her back and her cortizone shots in her knees she fuctions just like you and me. When those shot start to wear off and she still has time to wait before new ones. She is as frail a women you have ever seen. So dont judge by what you see a doctor has determined that they deserve that handicapped pass.

  14. to get a handicapped sticker you need a doctors perscription.  My son is handicapped and he has one.

I know it is frustrating but you don't know why people have them.  I see healthy LOOKING people with them but they might have heart problems...or cancer and can't walk for long...they might have lung problems..or something else you cannot see!

some people use them when they belong to someone else...but you don't know that unless you ask.

Ask your boss the procedure for confronting someone who looks healthy but has a sticker.  Each place has different points of view and standards on how to handle this.

  15. people need to realize that...NOT ALL handicap people have walking issues dammit..I have a handicap sticker and I have it for shortness of breath and asthema..I cant walk long distances up any kind of hill.  I have so many ignorant people come up to me and say you don't look handicap...well ignorant people..some people have cancer, heart disease, asthema, they may be dying and you just have no clue...so just go on about your business and leave the handicap diagnosis's to their doctors.  Thanks
