I am just starting to learn Italian and my understanding is that candele and candeline both mean candles. How are they used differently?

  1. "candeline" literally means "little candles"; in fact that term is only used for the little candles you put on a birthday cake.

  2. yes, they both mean plural candles.  however, candele means 'candles'.  and candeline means 'little candles.' that's the difference.

EDIT: actually kelly, 'one small candle' is actually 'una candelina' it is feminine.  and kelly i didn't thumb you down either someone else did.

  3. I agree with Pinguino,  candeline it is usually used in reference to birthday cake candles.

  4. "Candele" is "candle." When you add -ino (or any variation thereof) to a word, it makes it small (and kinda cute). So "candelina" is "little candle."

Edit: Ah, thanks! It ended in "e" so I forgot which gender it was. Sorry, changed it to "candelina."
