When spiking a volleyball, do you give it a full swing of the arm or stop the motion once contact w/ the ball?

i have played v-ball with a few coaches and found this to be a conflicting matter. some say to give it a full swing (where the arm swings all the way back down to the side of your waist) others have said to swing only until you hit the ball then stop the swinging motion. i have always preferred the full swing but i dunno, what do you guys think? also, do the different approaches(full swing/ swing and stop) affect the power of the spike significantly?

  1. You should follow thru for full power, but of course you don't want to hit the net, so do what you need to in the moment.

  2. Full swing is better technique but anyone who plays good ball knows you can't always do the full swing.  If the ball is tight or if you need a quick hit because of a good block then you have to give the ball a good snap.  it all depends on the situation.  Learn how to use different tecniques and use them when its appropriate.  This goes for all areas of the game.

    Good luck.

  3. You run up to the net step left right left jump and swing your arm backall the way.

  4. full swing, it gives a good follow thru and gives more power

  5. full swing is the best.  it gives more power and it's easier to pick a spot to hit at on the court.  like if you want a cut shot from right side you need to swing down to keep the ball in and still have a powerful swing.

  6. If you stop your swing intentionally, you could play for a team that I know.  They are called the Wallbangers.  And for a good reason.  They hit the ball FARTHER than most teams.  Not harder.  Not in.  Just farther.

All kidding aside, you will hit harder and in more consistently with the full arm swing.  The only time you should not use the full arm swing is on the tight sets.

  7. swing throughh all the wayy and dont forget to snapp your wristt :)

  8. ALWAYS a full swing!!!!

  9. always follow through in anything you do when hitting a volleyball.

  10. Gordon gave you the best answer....if you stop the swing you will be a great addition to the Wallbangers!

The only way you'll be successful with no follow through is if you can jump so high that you can be looking down at the ball as it's in the air.....no offence, but that's probably not the case.

  11. Yes, they do.

I always fully swing my arm. I feel it gives me more power.

  12. it depends on which kind of hit u want. if u want a topspin hit swing all the way through but if u want a float hit (which is good for serves) u want to stop your hand right as u contact the ball. when ur @ the net i would suggest to swing all the way through that way the ball goes down instead of going 20 feet out. but float serves can be used to ur advantage because if u hit the ball just right the ball moves in the air and it is tricky for the other team to pass ur serve.

  13. Always try to give a full swing when you have the clearance to do so. If you stop your swing after contact you will not get the desired topspin on the ball. Topspin helps to drive the ball downward.

  14. always full swing and snap your wrist to get the ball to have a good hard frontspin so it travels to the ground faster and makes it harder for your opponent to return it.

  15. u have to do a full swing so that u can have more power and better aim. to spike you swing ur head up over ur head and then once u hit u bring it down finishing the swing. u will hit better this way trust me

  16. As long as you have a REALLY good snap, that's all that matters and get on TOP of the ball.  i don't think you should stop the motion because it might go forward, but I guess if you stop the motion to snap, then it's good =)

  17. everyone from my middle coaches, to my high school coaches, and at camps with Purdue have always told us to swing full and when you do liek follow down your side like you were reaching or putting something in your pocket.

  18. always swing fully thru the ball. Get a lot more power that way

  19. If i  swing all the way threw it doesn't end up well for my team cause it never stays in the court. My coaches always told me that if i full swing that i have to snap down on the ball so that it doesn't float and go out so that it snaps down  really hard. But,  if the players are back behind the first white line or whatever color it is i always dop a swing where i hit it short by stopping as soon as have contact so that it ends up right in front of the net on the other side cause the other team has no time to approach it. But, it all depends on how comfortable you are with your swing and approach.

  20. i play for my varsity high school team

and the first thing is that it depends what position you play,

if you are an outside hitter than you should swing fully because you are more away from the net

but if you are a middle and hit quick sets than you should not swing your arm all the way through because you are close to the net, instead you should snap your wrist quickly at the top of the ball to generate more power

  21. i got 2 words for ya: FOLLOW THROUGH!!!   if u follow through, you can snap your wrist down, which brings the ball down instead of out and down.when you stop, the ball acts lke when you seerve it, it goes out, not down.
