  1. I have surfed waves that size with both long and short boards, and so have thousands of other surfers. I suspect that if you are asking this question on line, that you may not be ready to surf waves that size.

Where are you going to be riding these waves? Who do you surf with now who rides them? You don't give us enough information to really give you a good answer. What type of board are you riding smaller waves with?

Add some info to your question, and lots of us will have suggestions.

  2. If you're asking this on the internet, then you shouldn't be riding that big of a wave (no offense).

However, shortboard wise, I use either a 6'1 or a 6'3 pintail for waves that size, both with a good bit of front entry rocker.

Though for you, it really depends on your surfing abilities. As you become a more experienced surfer, its possible for you to ride smaller boards (up to a point). Thats why, at nearly six feet tall and 160 pounds, I generally ride nothing bigger than a 5'10 or 6'0 squash tail thruster if its under 8 feet.

But becuse you're asking this question here, I'm going to suggest a 6'6 or 6'8 pintail, thruster or quad, though quads are a little faster.

  3. if you were at the level of surfing to be able to surf big waves, you wouldnt have to ask that question

  4. First get lessons. The instructor will supply the board. Good luck with surfing.

  5. It really depends on your height. I have surf 10 ft waves on a 7'6'' board.

I have also surfed those waves with a shortboard.

  6. depends... are you a longboarder or a shortboarder? And it depends on your height and weight... maybe something around 7ft?
