Question:

When talking about the size of a TV, what do the length, width, and height refer to?

The reason I ask this is because I always thought that if this is a TV, the dimensions are as follows:

_________

/_______/__/<=== height (depth)

|_______|__|

|_______|__|<=== length

|_______|__/

<=width=>

Am I wrong? And also, what does the actual size of the TV refer to (for example, a 42" TV)? Is it measured across the diagonal of the TV? Also, does the size of the TV reflect the size of the entire TV, or only the viewable area?

  1. All screen are measure diagonally, this being said. These two screens have the same measurement, but as you can see one is wider than the other one. This is when lenght x height is important when choosing a TV.

    ____________                _____________

           42"              height                 42"             height

                                               _____________

    ____________                        lenght

           lenght

    Just compare an LG 47" with a Philips 47"

    Philips come out on top with a wider screen.

  2. I would think....

    height = vertically

    width = the shortest dimension and runs horizontally from the front of the TV to the back

    length = the horizontal length of the screen.

    And yes, the size of the TV is measured diagonally from corner to corner of the TV screen (the viewable area)
