coverage, are they computer generated (CG) images of the holes or are they actual fly throughs of the holes using a helicopter? I was watching the Masters one day and they said that they had a CG image of a hole showing the layout of the green, and that got me to wonder if all of their flythroughs are computer generated...

  1. The answer is both. Helicopter shots are used but many courses have been computer modeled as well by game companies and others.

  2. im pretty its real like helicopter footage. but like in advance.

  3. Most is actual film from a helicoptor flying overhead.  You often seen the choppers shadow on the ground, and there are no flags in the greens.  More recently they have been using computer 3D images (like at the Masters) which helps to show elevation changes much better than a live overhead shot where you don't have much depth perception.

  4. both of them

  5. Most of the time you'll see actual footage filmed from a helicopter fly-over before the tournament begins.

Sadly, however, this practice has waned a bit, especially on network PGA TOUR coverage.  It really is a useful tool for viewers.  You see more of it on TGC's coverage of European Tour events.

As for American networks' coverage of the TOUR, NBC still utilizes this tool, but they seem to only focus on the key holes...the holes which are most likely to produce flucuations on the leaderboard.

  6. That is a good question for many tournaments from a couple of years back had all the hole layouts made from actual flythroughs a day or two before the beginning of a tournament, then computerized for use during the broadcast. This was evident when the hole image had the shadow of the helicopter when the day of play was overcast.

  7. Based on how they are use they're creativity to give the best shot to audience.I think maybe CGI because I love it.
