When temperature decreases....?

What happens to the atoms? Do the atoms in the substance speed up, slow down, or stop?

Im thinkin slow down, but I want to be sure..

  2. Yes, the vibrations decrease when the temperature decreases - they bounce around less. But the electrons also descend in their energy states, so the electrons too are less energetic.

    However, at absolute zero, although there is no 'jiggling' of the atoms: they do not move around at all, and the electrons are all at their lowest energy states, that does not mean that the electrons are stationary. They are still moving at extremely high speeds and still form a cloud  in the very nearest proximity of the nucleus of the atom - one says 'around', but that hints at a sort of planetary arrangement which it is not.

  3. They slow down.
