Some of the big cities in the west coast around 1776 were San Francisco, CA, San Jose CA, San Gabriel, CA ( L.A ), San Antonio Texas, Pueblo, Colorado, Alburqueque NM, and All the Spanish Missions of the Royal Spanish trails of Mexico.

At around that time, California was being explored by Captain James Cook.

In New Mexico, the Spanish were building forts to protect themselves from the Athabaskan and the Navajo.

In Texas and Arizona, the Spanish had several thriving colonies and were successfully negotiating with the Apache.

Oregon was being explored by Bruno de Heceta and James Cook, amongst others.

Colorado was pretty much unexplored, except for a few native American tribes.
