Im just curious? Im 100% sure its real. Negative answers are more than welcome. I just want to see where people stand on this issue in general?

  1. The alarmists brought this on themselves, by dramatically overstating their case, lying about the MWP and making statements such as "warming causes hurricanes" that they had no basis for making and then making the OPPOSITE statements ("warming reduces hurricanes") in an effort to explain away why what they said global warming would cause didn't happen.

There are some climatologists who use more measured rhetoric, who concede a prolonged and global MWP at least as warm as the 1st half of the 20th century (though they were essentially forced to admit this by McIntyre, who gets little credit for that), and who don't declare "we've got 10 years," and there are those who advocate solutions to the possible problem of CO2 that are ALSO solutions to other, known and definite problems - - such as nuclear fuel and finding an alternative to gasoline.

But a lot of them saw fit to allow the fringe to make their "sky is falling" arguments in order to scare people into supporting broad restrictions when in the long run interest of their cause they should have muzzled the fringe.

  2. well, up until a few years ago, no one believed global warming was real at ALL. then when the evidence became so staggeringly clear (extinctions, melting glaciers, rising sea levels and stronger storms) then they all said "ok. you got us. it's real. but man isn't the cause!"

and thats the current debate. they've thrown all sorts of excuses such as "all the planets are warming" and "it's been hotter in earlier times" and even "more CO2 is good for the earth"

When scientists find evidence to support climate change it's a "fascist liberal agenda" but when scientists find evidence against it, it's true sound science.

all the doubting is just really the peoples way of saying they don't give a d**n. And I know this cause comments like that are starting to become more common. most people just don't care, cause they figure as long as it doesn't effect them now, then someone else can deal with it.

Pollution also indirectly kills more than 400,000 people each year and they couldn't be happier about it.

  3. A lot of people don't bother to really think about the issue.  Note one of the above answerers who said that we're having cold winters.  Obviously, individual winters have no bearings on the overall statistical trends in temperatures.  A person who knew how to think clearly and logically would not have said something like that.

Many of your answerers have said things like "it's been happening for thousands of years".  Yes, that's the point.  The current trend is not explainable in terms of the natural cycles.  Again, not bothering to think critically.

I think my favorite answer so far is "It's arrogant to think we can explain such a complex system."  Sure, it's too complicated for me to understand, so there's no way to answer it.  Don't even bother.  Lazy thinking.

Ultimately, people believe what they want to, and many people, I'm sorry to say, can allow themselves to be persuaded by the weakest of arguments.  Many people simply aren't that bright.

Also, keep in mind that people tend to trust things that they see as part of their "political beliefs"  If saying that humans are causing global warming is associated with the political left, everything becomes suspect.  Political conspiracy theories crop up, politics enters into their mind, and reason shuts down.

  4. Again I'd like to address people that say "oh it's happened before in geological history, what makes this different?"  You think environmental scientists don't know this?  Trust me I am a environmental science major and I have taken all kinds of Geology classes.  They aren't stupid.  What you don't understand is that those natural cycles are delicate.  It already has been discovered that cooling periods can be counteracted by greenhouse gases building up in our atmosphere, which can cause a warming of the earth when it's suppose to be cooling.  This has happened rescently in geological history where tectonic activity spewed out drastic amounts of CO2, but more importantly, methane in our atmosphere and warmed the planet while it was suppose to be cooling.  Guess what, we're suppose to be in a cooling period!  Evidence shows that the globe is warming.  Do you really think adding more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere does nothing?  I mean I don't get what some of you people are argueing.  The only arguement is how much will we effect the natural cycle.  Global warming is happening, get over it.

  5. I think the main reason, for me, that I don't believe in global warming is the fact that this all happened before.  The earth has ebbed and flowed for eons, drifting from very cold to warmer climates, and back again. Isn't that the theory for the demise of the dinosaurs????  And all the other unexplained changes noted by archaeologists.  having said that, I do believe that all humans need to do everything we should to take care of the planet.   We make a mess, we need to clean it up.  Its as simple as that.

  6. People are relgious God wouldnt let it happen so its not going to happen

  7. What overwhelming evidence?

There is nothing abnormal about today's climate, nor is it spinning out of control.  We may be contributing, but nature is still far and away the biggest driver of climate.  Earth has been much colder and much warmer many times before.  Our current CO2 levels are well below average.

It's a false scare.  Humans are tropical animals, we do better in nicer weather.  The earth has been warmer and wetter not all that long ago, life thrived.  What we should fear is cold, glacial epochs have not been kind to humans and our kin.  CO2 is a trace gas, if it increases 10 or 20 fold in quantity, it will still be a trace gas.  But it's a vital gas, absent CO2 in the atmosphere, we would soon run out of food as all plant life ceased.  Falling CO2 levels are a lot scarier than rising level.

The entire issue isn't being driven by science and reason.  "The science is in",  "The debate is over", "We have the answers" -- does that sound like science to you?  Science isn't smug statements, it's constant questions.  We don't begin to understand climate.  It is incredibly complex.  Global warming is a big spook story told by questionable people demanding action now without a reasoned look at the facts.  It's a con.

Global warming is so much running around crying the sky is falling.  It detracts from solving real problems.  Half of the world's population still lives in pretty miserable poverty.  They need electricity, food, clean water, jobs, education, shoes, medicine, transportation, decent government, sound money, etc, etc,  In other words we have real pressing problems before us that will go unsolved because whoever might have put time and energy into resolving the problem is instead out titling at windmills.

  8. The science just doesn't hold together for me.  CO2 absorbes one frequency of infared radiation (15 micron wavelength).  Since the greenhouse theory was first developed it has been discovered that most of the atmosphere is already opaque to this frequency of radiation so changing CO2 concentrations has very little affect on the absorbtion characteristics of the atmosphere.

Researchers have established a cult following and don't want to let this go so they've come up with all kinds of feedback theories which can't be tested, to try to keep the greenhouse theory alive.

  9. NASA and the real data people are reporting that global temperatures are flat. And that they were the highest in the 1930's. That doesn't square with human activity, though it does correlate to solar activity.

This looks more like re-distribution of wealth than it looks like science.

Now, excuse me while I buy some indulgences from the Church and go flagellate myself...

  10. I don't think they people doubt the fact that global warming is for real, they just don't care. People have been warning us for 3 decades about what we are doing that is hazardous to the planet. Ralph Nadar , for one.

Now and only now, have they taken a slight interest. More and more people are just interested in their own little world and nothing else.

It has taken big stars and leaders of the music industry to warn people of the fact that we are really harming the planet and even still, there are doubters, or people who don't care.

There is a movie, whose name escapes me right now, that warns us of what will happen when we ignore the facts. If more people saw this movie, maybe they would start caring a bit more.Dawg gone it- wish I could remember that name!

It takes people who care to make other people aware of the situation. There is an organization called Care2 ,who handles all kinds of subjects for  people to vote on and sign petitions for the betterment of the planet and wildlife. When you join, you can select what you want to support and in what way to do it.

Geez- sorry to have gone on so long , but this is a subject that I really care about and I get a little long winded when I talk about this subject-so sorry about that-forgot that you just wanted an answer and not a thesis-LOL!

  11. The question is not that the earth has warmed up, but rather is man responsible for the warming.  The hypothesis is not that co2 is a greenhouse gas, or that the build up of co2 will cause temperatures to increase.  The hypothesis is that the build up of co2 is cause for alarm, and that drastic measures have to be taken to reduce its emissions.

There is a lot of evidence that man is not primarily responsible for the rise in temperatures.

  12. The don't read the scientific literature, they don't trust governments (including research labs from governments all over the world), and they are afraid everyone is out to get their money.

  13. I don't understand how people scientists or otherwise, can conclude that they so completely understand such a vast system. It's pure arrogance.

  14. Doubters because it affects the benefits of convenience. Me, I wish we could go back to the 1700's, or at least instead of vehicles, horses & buggies...ahh,

  15. Yes, evidence the Earth is warming is very strong...it has been for thousands of years.  The theory man is responsible, however, comes up severely lacking in the evidence department.

  16. Islamic fascists are 100% sure they will get virgins in heaven upon a suicide attack... but they wont.  So being 100% sure means nothing.  And in this case, you are 100% wrong :)  The facts point against your theory, lol, read some more.

    ---- edit -------

ah, I am sorry,  assumed you stood for the man-made global warming hoax.  I take back the affected portions of what I said if you do not stand for man-caused global warming

  17. if the oil companys pay me millions of dollars to do research proving global warming is a fallacy, ill become a doubter too.

ps. there will always be doubters. there are people who still "doubt" the earth is round

  18. With the cold so brutal, and the snow so deep, how can anyone still believe in "global warming"?

  19. If people believed and felt obliged to 'act now'... they would have to compromise some of the things they enjoy... like their fuel guzzeling 4 wheel drives.
