Flying cars assume a few things, that you have a vehicle that can travel easily on both the street and in the air, or that it can be converted easily from a car to an airplane.

There are many different requirements for both a car and an airplane, and also the airspace system is vastly more complicated than the simply lines on the road that we drive on.

For one, you probably need some avionics, which is standard on most aircraft, but is dead weight in a car.

Second, having wings would mean it would be extremely difficult to maneuver in traffic, and switching them out may be risky, because wings must be attached firmly to the airplane or they can break off under the stresses of flight.

The best solution is simply to have a car and a personal aircraft. There are many aircraft that sear 4 or less people and are not much more expensive than a car if it weren't for the insurance and maintaince. These also usually have the same type of piston engine as cars as well.

Aside from experimental models, I don't see it happening anytime soon. The FAA would have ****-fit over the idea of tens of thousands of morons taking to the air, and I don't think they wouldn't be too thrilled about having to issue tens of thousands of pilot's licenses to said morons.

Pedro has basically answered this question but let me expound a bit. A "flying car" would have to be a mode of transportation that is kept completely separate from aviation as it exists today. That being said, an infrastructure of some sort that would guide and control traffic to avoid mega-disasters would have to be put into place. The fail-safe systems involved would probably make both the flying car and the infrastructure very expensive.

As Pedro pointed out, there are a lot of idiots out there now on the roads. The last thing I want in the sky around me is some guy who flies like he drives (like a maniac).

It will happen someday; just not right away.
