  1. It can be fall or winter (in the northern hemisphere).  The deepest dark will be on the Winter Solstice, december 21st.  The sun disappears at the north pole on the Autumnal Equinox, September 23rd, and reappears on the Vernal Equinox, March 21st.  Note that this is for the exact north pole.


  2. You can get a taste of it if you travel to Longyearbyen, Norway for vacation.  They are at 78 degrees N, about 800 miles south of the north pole, but well north of the Arctic Circle.  The sun doesn't rise at all from early November til late January, although much of that time it looks like dusk, there's just that much light.  That's also the farthest north place you can take a commercial flight on SAS airlines.  Go do it, it looks awesome there!

  3. It's winter, because if  it was summer the sun can still reach the northpole.
