When there is no wind or current, how should a boater approach a dock?

a. approach the dock with the bow pointed directly at the dock

b. back into the dock stern first

c. approach parallel to the dock and allow the wind and current to push the vessel to the dock.

d. approach the dock slowly at a 10 to 20 degree angle

  1. d, but from the side (port or starboard) opposite in which the propeller turns while in forward, so you can walk the stern in when you check your way with the throttle.


  2. There is always some wind or current to compensate for so "a, & c. slowly" are your best choice after you have decided which side of the boat you want to unload. Port or starboard?

    I'm not sure how you plan to pull off "b" since the stem and bow are forward.

  3. D... if there is no wind or current approaching parallel isn't going to do any good... and under normal conditions, with current, etc. you approach at an angle into the current.. :)
