identify means to name something. so for example if the subject was racism, you would identify that the central conflict was 'racism' and then tracing the central conflict means you pick out what the central aspect of racism might be (for this example we'll just say hate crimes/violence) and trace it. Basically imagine it as a timeline, and trace it to the beginning giving info and providing examples of how it began.
