Is closing the lid of my laptop adequate? It's not shutting it off, it just puts it to sleep I think.

  1. Even if you left it open and running it wouldn't affect the navigation systems. h**l, we use laptops in the cockpit for crying out loud. When will you folks learn.

  2. I agree with the second gent. Its effects are probably miniscule but why take the chance?

I know what you mean though. I have a laptop and I hate to shut if off because it takes so long to boot back up. But, if it means the slightest difference between a routine flight and who knows what, I'll err on the side of safety every time.

Even "sleeping" computers emit a small amount of RF energy  that can have a very slight effect on avionics/electronic flight controls.

  3. I disagree.  Not shutting it off means it continues to work at some level.  Working emits radio frequency which CAN interfere with the navigation system on an airplane.

I doubt it would, but because FAA has proved that there is a remote possibility, it's better to comply completely.  You wouldn't want to go down just because of someones sleeping computer.

  4. I have seen people speak on their cell phones during take off. I mean this one woman waited until we were charging down the runway to make a phone call. This was out of Newark. Are these people living in a parallel universe?

I would shut it down completely. Or don't bring it or wait until after it is safe to put it on.

  5. when your laptop or computer goes into sleep mode it is running on a reduced rate of power than when it's not in sleep mode. So, yes I think this would be adequate... but I am not 100% sure

  6. Closing your laptop puts the machine into hibernation. That means it writes the contents of memory to your hard drive to enable a quick restart and then turns itself off. When "asleep," your laptop is not running the processor, the display, or the hard drive. It's completely inert and therefore safe for the aircraft.
